Indications

The treatment of infections caused by tetracycline-sensitive organisms e.g.:

  • Borrellia recurrentis (relapsing fever)

  • Chlamydia species (psittacosis, lymphogranuloma venerium, trachoma, salpingitis, urethritis)

  • Haemophilus ducreyi (chancroid)

  • Leptospira in penicillin hypersensitivity as an alternative to erythromycin (meningitis, jaundice)

  • Mycoplasma pneumoniae (granuloma inguinale)

  • Rickettsiae (typhus fever, Q fever, rocky mountain spotted fever)

  • Vibrio species (cholera)

Indications

  • Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic with a broad spectrum of action against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as some other organisms.

  • Chloramphenicol is indicated in:
    - Severe typhoid and other salmonella infections.
    - Bacterial meningitis, especially against Haemophilus   influenza, Streptococcus peneumoniae and Neisseria   meningitis

  • Severe anaerobic infections, particularly in brain abscesses, and in infections below the diaphragm where Bacteroides fragilis is often implicated

  • Typhus and the spotted fevers

  • Anthrax, severe systemic infections, severe gastro-enteritis and gas gangrene

  • It is a cost effective antibiotic, although effect on bone marrow should be borne in mind during long-term oral therapy

Indications

  • Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used, usually in combination, to treat severe systemic infections due to Gram-negative, some Gram-positive and other organisms.

  • Intermediate activity against Pseudomonas, although needs to be combined with metronidazole to cover anaerobic bacteria.
