Axacef Suspension
Cefuroxime
125mg/5ml &
250mg/5ml
Key Benefits
- Empirical treatment with agents such as cefuroxime axetil may ensure the appropriate use of newer antibacterial agents, potentially preventing the emergence of resistance to these newer drugs
- Empirical therapy for a range of community-acquired respiratory infections, including those in which ?-lactamase producing strains of common respiratory pathogens are identified as the causative organisms
- The suspension contains micro-pellets of cefuroxime axetil coated with stearic acid to mask the bitter taste. Difficult to manufacture but marketed by Medreich
- Both the overall incidence of GI adverse events and the incidence of nausea and vomiting are markedly lower with Axacef (cefuroxime axetil) than with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid
- Convenience of twice daily dosing improving compliance
- Cefuroxime is also available as the sodium salt as brand Roxicef for parenteral administration. This permits oral follow through with the same antibiotic, when a change from parenteral to oral therapy is clinically indicated, with the added benefits of a reduction in cost and greater convenience
